Our town of Casino, is part of the Richmond Valley, and has a strong rural base, population 11,000 and is growing. We are only twenty minutes from the larger city of Lismore, population 60,000. Our local Aboriginal population of 600-700 are a mixture of youth, adults and Elders and are part of the ‘Bundjalung Nation’. NAIDOC week is celebrated in July with a children’s Sports Day, also ATSIS Ball and local Aboriginal Art and Craft which includes sport and storytelling.

The Northern Rivers has a rich Aboriginal history stretching back thousands of years. Despite the decimation of the population when European settlers opened up this area, several large Goori communities remain. The 2001 census counted 8,108 Indigenous people living here, although local Aboriginal Health Workers estimate the figure to be closer to 9,500.

There are several Aboriginal community owned services available namely Land Councils, Aboriginal Housing Co-op, Junbung Elders, Business Enterprise Centre, Aboriginal Home Care and Aboriginal Play Group.

Although we mainly see Aboriginal people, we offer our services to the wider mixed community.

Casino boasts being the beef capital of Australia, with the Beef Week celebrations lasting twelve days. Along with several other events, like Primex (Agricultural exhibition) and horse racing Gold Cup carnival, are other community activities.

Sporting facilities are also in abundant with a variety of sports including hockey, baseball, cricket, swimming, golf, squash, tennis, rugby, rugby league, netball, cycling, athletics, croquet, soccer, lawn bowls etc.

We call our region the ‘Northern Rivers of NSW’ (Grafton to Tweed Heads) and it has a vibrant blend of people, landscapes with rural and regional lifestyles. Home to about 255,647 residents, it is the state's fastest growing region.

The stunning hinterland, with its farmland, rainforests and waterfalls, and the pristine coastline, with its beaches and estuaries, are readily accessible. The warm sub-tropical climate keeps the land lush and green. Once covered by a rainforest known as “The Big Scrub”, the land was largely cleared for Red Cedar and Agriculture and only small pockets remain. However, substantial areas are being reafforested.

The Northern Rivers area is renowned for its arts, crafts, fishing, colourful weekly markets and leisure activities. It is home to the international backpacking destination of Byron Bay, which is a mecca for holiday makers wanting to enjoy the glorious bay and laidback lifestyle.

People move to the Northern Rivers for a more relaxed way of life. It provides all the benefits of rural or regional living, Yet, it is still within easy driving distance of the city for weekend breaks. Brisbane is 2 ½ -3 hours drive from Casino, the Gold Coast is just 1½ hours away and Sydney is 1¼ hours by plane from Lismore. There are also International airports at Coolangatta on the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
